Fact Check: Video of Srisailam Dam from Andhra Pradesh shared as Tripura’s Dumbur dam

Recently, both India’s northeast region and Bangladesh have been experiencing severe flooding. During this crisis, various social media influencers, propagandists, and organizations have spread false claims to further their own agendas. A video has emerged online showing a dam with open gates and water flowing downstream, which has been falsely identified as the Dumbur Dam in Tripura. However, D-Intent Data has confirmed that this video actually depicts the Srisailam Dam in Andhra Pradesh.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter), @Tahmina62344037 wrote. Status of Dambu Hydroelectric Power Project or Dambu Gate in Tripura, India. (Translated from Bengali)

Another user @SohelAh66 has also shared the video and wrote. “Status of Dambu Hydroelectric Power Project or Dambu Gate in Tripura, India. How long India will have to tolerate such inhuman behavior!!??”

Several other users and influencers have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @KhairJannat, @Kh63Ratna

The truth about the viral video shared as Srisailam Dam, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video of a dam with open gates and water flowing downstream came to our notice, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was not from Tripura but from Andhra Pradesh.

To verify the claims made by the users, we performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens which led us to several media reports containing the same visuals of the dam.

According to the media reports(1, 2), this video actually features the Srisailam Dam in Andhra Pradesh, with its gates lifted a few weeks ago. Hence It is unrelated to Tripura’s Dumbur Hydroelectric Power project.

Moreover, India’s Foreign Ministry has clarified that the recent flooding in eight eastern districts of Bangladesh is not caused by water release from the Dumbur Dam on the Gumti River.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video is not from Tripura’s Dumbur Dam but it is from Srisailam Dam in Andhra Pradesh. The flooding situation in Bangladesh is not due to the release of Indian water.

Intent

Social media users, influencers and propagandists are circulating videos from Andhra Pradesh. And making misleading claims to set their narrative regarding the flooding situation in Bangladesh.
