Fact Check: Massive blast at ordnance factory in Maharashtra’s Bhandara, propagandists circulate misleading claims

Visuals showing the aftermath of an explosion are being circulated with claims that Naxals carried out a suicide blast at an Indian military ordnance factory in Nagpur, resulting in several casualties. However, these claims are baseless and misleading. Verified reports and sources confirm that the explosion was accidental and not linked to any militant or Naxal activity.

Sharing the visuals on X (Formerly Twitter) propaganda account @Zeus_Reloads wrote, “Nagpur, India. Naxal fighters have attacked the Bhandara Ordinance Factory, as a result, 8x personnel have been killed. Smoke can be seen coming out of the factory, developing story….”

Another propaganda account @PSYWAROPS also shared the visuals and wrote, “Massive blasts at a military ammunition factory in Bhandara, Maharashtra, India, have left multiple dead and many injured. The incident is suspected to be a suicide attack.”

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the visuals and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @NavCom24, @ConflictWatchX, @SAnPerspective.

The truth behind the claims, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the visuals and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the claims. We found that the claims about targeted attacks or suicide attacks were false and fabricated.

To verify the claims made by propagandists. We performed a relevant keyword search and found multiple reports regarding the explosion. According to reports (1, 2, 3), The explosion was accidental and not linked to any militant or Naxal activity. Tragically, the incident occurred at an ordnance factory in Maharashtra’s Bhandara district on Friday, claiming the lives of eight individuals. The exact cause of the explosion is being ascertained.

Moreover, as per The Hindu, A committee has been constituted to investigate the blast at the Ordnance Factory in Bhandara district, Maharashtra, which killed eight workers and injured five others on Friday (January 24, 2025). The Deputy Commissioner of Labour (Central), Nagpur, will lead the inquiry, with the probe set to begin on January 27, officials said on Saturday (January 25, 2025).

Therefore, it is evident from available sources that the factory was not targeted by terrorists or Naxals.
