Fact Check: New Orleans truck attack was carried out by an Indian American?

Extremist and propagandist accounts are actively spreading misinformation regarding the New Orleans truck attack, falsely claiming that the suspect was an Indian Hindu who shouted “Jai Shri Ram” during the incident. These claims are entirely baseless and fabricated to mislead the public and incite communal tension. According to verified reports, the attacker has been identified as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a 42-year-old resident of Texas. He has no connection to the Hindu community or India.

Sharing the visuals from the incident on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @QueenBangla wrote, “An #Indian American man drove a car into a crowd in New Orleans, USA on #NewYear. Initial reports say that the man was heard shouting “jai shri ram” and exploding his car, kîlling 10 people and injuring 35. The terrorist also exchanged gunfire with law enforcement and was killed.

Pakistan-based anti-India propaganda account @TacticalTribun also made a post and wrote, An Indian RAW operative, Shams, attacked in New Orleans, US, killed 10 people injuring 35. He was targeting a Khalistani leader. Later, he deleted the post.

The truth behind the claims about New Orleans truck attack, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the visuals and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident. We found that the accused was not an Indian American but a US individual from Texas. 

To verify the claims made by propagandists. We performed relevant keyword searches and found several reports regarding the incident. According to the reports (1, 2, 3), the attacker has been identified as Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, a 42-year-old resident of Texas. He has no connection to the Hindu community or India. Instead, he is a member of the Muslim community and was reportedly inspired by ISIS, a known terrorist organization.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the suspect in the New Orleans truck attack was not an Indian American but a US individual from Texas.
