Fact Check: American woman harassed and heckled for not wearing hijab in Bangladesh?

A video circulating online depicts a group of teenagers harassing a woman on a busy street, with claims that she is an American being heckled by Bangladeshis for not wearing a hijab. However, D-Intent Data has found that these assertions are false and misleading. The woman in the video is Mishti Subas, an actress from Bangladesh and supporter of Sheikh Hasina. She was targeted for celebrating Sheikh Hasina’s birthday by cutting a cake, and the incident has no connection to an American woman or hijab-related issues.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @HPhobiaWatch wrote, An American woman is heckled and harassed by Bangladeshis for not wearing Hijab. This is what free Bangladesh under the leadership of Nobel Laureate Younus looks like – A Global shame. 

Another propaganda account @FrontalForce has also shared the video and wrote. A women attacked by jihadis in Bangladesh bcoz she was not wearing hijab. Bangladesh has become Afghanistan.

The truth about the viral video from Bangladesh, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was not related to American women or Hijab. 

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to several media reports (1, 2, 3) containing the same visuals. According to reports, the woman in the video is Mishti Subas, a Bangladeshi actress and supporter of Sheikh Hasina. She was targeted for celebrating Sheikh Hasina’s birthday by cutting a cake, at the Student-teacher Center Of Dhaka University, and the incident has no connection to an American woman or hijab-related issues.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the woman in the video was not an American. But a Bangladeshi actress and supporter of Sheikh Hasina. Also, it was not related to hijab and religious hate crimes.
