Fact Check: Rape victim’s father Montu Chandra Das murdered in Barguna, communal claims circulated 

Claims have emerged alleging that a Hindu man, Montu Chandra Das, was murdered after filing a rape complaint regarding his 12-year-old daughter in Bangladesh. The incident is being framed as a religiously motivated hate crime against the Hindu community in the country. However, the fact is that the accused in the rape case, Srijib Chandra Roy, belongs to the same community as the victim.

Sharing visuals on X (Formerly Twitter) @VHindus71 wrote, “Bangladesh: 12-yr-old Hindu girl raped, father killed after filing case. Kalibari, Koroitola, Barguna. Incident sparks outrage.”

Another account @SanataniHinduBD also shared the visuals and wrote, “Bangladesh: 12 year old Hindu girl RAPED, Father Murdered after filing rape case. Location: Kalibari, Koroitola, Borguna.”

The truth behind the claims about Montu Chandra Das, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the visuals and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the incident. We found that the incident was not related to religious hate crimes.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found media reports regarding the incident. According to reports (1, 2), the accused in the rape case, Srijib Chandra Roy, belongs to the same community as the victim. Montu Chandra Das had filed a case against Roy, who is currently in custody. 

Additionally, Shikha Rani, the wife of the deceased, stated, “My husband filed a case at the police station seeking justice for the rape of our daughter. Since the accused is in jail, his relatives may be behind the murder.” Local authorities are actively investigating the case, and further actions are being taken. 

Meanwhile, a video circulating online, showing a man’s body discovered in a forested area, is unrelated to this incident and originates from Tripura, India, not Bangladesh.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the incident was not related to a religious hate crime. The accused and the victim belonged to the same community.
