Fact Check: Teenager caught stealing undergarments, video circulated with misleading claims

A video circulating online depicts individuals confronting a teenage boy caught stealing undergarments. Some have falsely claimed that the boy is an illegal Rohingya or Bangladeshi named Mohammad Zubair. However, D-Intent Data has found that these claims are inaccurate.

Sharing the short video on X (Formerly Twitter), serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @RealBababanaras wrote. An illegal Bangladeshi Mohammad Zubair caught stealing women’s undergarments from a shop. These illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingyas are heavily contributing to all type of crimes in India.

Another propaganda account @FrontalForce has also shared the video and wrote. An illegal refugee Mohammad Zubair caught stealing women’s undergarments from a shop. These illegal Rohingyas are heavily contributing to all type of crimes in India.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here @ajaychauhan41, @DeshBhagatLaun1, @randomsenafamm

The truth about the viral video of teenager caught stealing undergarments, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the short video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was outdated and unrelated to illegal Rohingyas or Bangladeshi.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to a Reddit post containing the same and a longer version of the video uploaded five months ago. The Reddit user shared the video in multiple parts(1, 2). In the second part of the video, the boy clearly states that his name is Sahil and that his father’s name is Santosh. However, we couldn’t find the exact location and details about the video but as per the name mentioned by the accused boy, it can be said that the boy was not an illegal Rohingya or Bangladeshi.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video was not related to illegal Rohingyas or Bangladeshi. But involved an Indian teenager.
