The Context:

As we dig further, we found out that the incident revolves around Aman Bhandari, a 20 year young man residing in Dehradun. On July 27, near the entrance of his college in Patel Nagar, he fell victim to a vicious attack. This attack was sparked by a purported “objectionable religious post on his Facebook account,” which allegedly led to tensions escalating within the community. Around 10 to 15 individuals, reportedly associated with the Muslim community, assaulted Aman Bhandari using sharp weapons while allegedly chanting religious slogans.

The Dehradun Police swiftly responded to the incident and apprehended four men, aged between 22 and 27, under charges of attempt to murder and rioting. These individuals were identified as Sanib, a resident of Bijnor, Asad Khan, Mohammed Talha, and Aman Khan, all residents of Patel Nagar.

A complaint was lodged by Bhandari’s sister, Anamika, who provided details of the incident. According to the FIR registered, Aman Bhandari had shared a forwarded WhatsApp post on his Facebook account. Although he later deleted the post and issued an apology, he and his family began receiving death threats from certain individuals. These individuals tracked him from college to his residence. On the day of the incident, around 10-15 assailants on two-wheelers intercepted him while he was returning home with friends at approximately 4:30 pm. They proceeded to attack him with rods and sharp weapons, causing severe injuries to his head and hands. Aman Bhandari was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment and his condition is said to be stable.

Response from the Local Community:

In response to this unfortunate incident, the local community expressed their discontent and regrettably, amidst these demonstrations, there was an occurrence where a few individuals confronted a member of the minority community. It is crucial to note that the purpose of these protests was to denounce the initial assault on Aman Bhandari and not to promote hostility against any particular group.

Misinformation Propagation:

Several Twitter accounts, including anti-India handles such as @ambedkariteIND, @KashifArsalaan, @Majstar7, @abdulla_alamadi, @AbuHafsah1, @HateDetectors, and @SatlujTV, have propagated misinformation regarding the incident. These habitual offenders, with a narrow mindset filled with hatred, aim to exploit divisive narratives and promote a negative agenda. Their actions are clearly anti-establishment and are detrimental to fostering harmony and understanding.

Law Enforcement and Investigation:

Police sources familiar with the case indicated that the attack was premeditated and fueled by outrage over the controversial religious post that Aman had uploaded on his Facebook account. Preliminary investigations suggest that the assailants planned the attack in response to this post. The Dehradun Police took prompt action, registering a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and subsequently detained 25 people for questioning. An ongoing investigation is underway to ensure justice is served. To prevent further communal discord, the police are taking action against those who are misusing the video to promote divisiveness.
