Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh — Old Video Of Villagers Beating Up a Thief Resurfaced With False Claims: Fact-Check 

Sensitive footage of a group of people hitting a helpless man with sticks has been circulated, and some individuals have misrepresented it as a hate crime committed against an innocent common man by miscreants.

Verified accounts on twiiter, including @stairwayto3dom tweeted “MAN SEVERELY BEATEN IN INDIA” on March 30, 2024. The tweet has received an about 15k views on X.

The video is outdated and has been disseminated without any context. In this video, a thief who was caught red-handed is being beaten up by the villagers.
The video in question is outdated and has not been properly contextualised. The thief is shown in this video being beaten up by the villagers after he was discovered. The incident happened in August 2023 in a village in the Sitapur area of Uttar Pradesh. Three thieves opened fire on the locals with illegal weapons; the enraged villagers apprehended them and beat them. Such infamous thefts were nothing new for such crooks. Afterwards, the they were admitted tp the hospital by the villagers. The police intervened against the locals as needed.

We visited aajtak, which published an article on this incident on August 21, 2023 with the headline “UP: 3 thieves who entered village head’s house were caught red-handed, villagers beat one to death”. The whole incident occured in Lokiya village of Rampur Mathura police station area. According to  SP,Chakresh Mishra of Sitapur, information was received on August 21 from Lokiya village that some robbers had broken into the house of Akhilesh Bhargava, the  house of head of the village, with the purpose to steal, but they were apprehended by the villagers. The same individuals then got the thief admitted to the hospital. A group of thieves in Sitapur, Uttar Pradesh, were severely thrashed with sticks by the locals after they broke into a residence late at night. where a criminal passed away while receiving treatment. On the basis of the village chief’s accusation, a case has been filed against the thieves. Police also took actions against the villagers.
