Fact Check: Fire breaks out in gas cylinder explosion in Bangladesh’s Lakshmipur, influencers circulate communal claims

A distressing video showing individuals injured and screaming amidst fire-engulfed structures is being circulated with claims that extremists set Hindu homes ablaze in Kusakhali Union, Lakshmipur district. Some members of the Hindu minority reportedly suffered partial burns. However, our investigation reveals that the fire was caused by a gas cylinder explosion in a house belonging to a minority community and was not an act of targeted violence.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) @HinduVoice_in wrote, “Bangladesh. Yesterday (17/03/2025) night, Islamists set ablaze Hindu houses in #Kusakhali union of Lakshmipur district. Some Hindu minorities got partially burnt. Warning: Disturbing footage”.

Another Propaganda account @pakistan_untold also shared the video and wrote, “Warning: Disturbing visuals. Poor Bangladeshi Hindu homes were set on fire by Islamists, leaving several Hindus injured. This happens to those Hindus who neither convert nor pay Jizya.”

The truth about the video from Lakshmipur, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident. We found that the fire was caused by a gas cylinder explosion, not an act of targeted violence.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a relevant keyword search and found media reports regarding the incident. According to reports (1, 2), a gas cylinder explosion in Lakshmipur has set fire to a house belonging to a minority community. Two houses and two kitchens belonging to four families have been gutted in the fire. A disabled youth named Roni Acharya has been burnt in the fire. Additionally, locals said that 70 per cent of his body had been burnt. The fire broke out at Thakur’s house adjacent to Purba Kalyanpur Janata College in Kushakhali Union of Sadar Upazila on Monday (March 17) night. With the help of locals and a unit of the fire service, the fire was brought under control.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was not related to targeted violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The fire was not targeted but accidental.
