Fact Check: Houses set on fire during clash between two factions of BNP in Bishnupur, Video circulated with communal claims

A video showing structures engulfed in flames is being circulated on social media with claims that extremists in Bangladesh targeted Hindus and set their houses set on fire in Bishnupur. However, these claims are false. According to reports, the incident was not a religious hate crime against Hindus but stemmed from a clash between two groups within the Muslim community in Bishnupur.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propaganda account @MeghUpdates wrote, “Another Heartbreaking news from Bangladesh. PEACEFULS have set fire to Hindu homes in Kuliadhar village, Bangladesh. Hindu minority homes are being burnt in Bangladesh on daily basis. SHAME…!”

Another propaganda account @FrontalForce also shared the video and wrote, “Another Heartbreaking news from Bangladesh. PEACEFULS have set fire to Hindu homes in Kuliadhar village, Bangladesh. Hindu minority homes are being burnt in Bangladesh on daily basis. SHAME…!”

The truth behind the claims, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis regarding the claims. We found that the incident was not a religious hate crime against Hindus but stemmed from a clash between two groups within the Muslim community in Bishnupur.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed relevant keyword searches and found reports regarding the incident. According to reports (1, 2), the incident was not a religious hate crime against Hindus but stemmed from a clash between two groups within the Muslim community in Bishnupur.

The conflict involved former Bishnupur Union BNP joint convener Ruhul Amin (alias Ruhul Member) and former Union BNP president Mostafizur Rahman. Supporters of Mostafizur Rahman attacked and set fire to the homes of Ruhul Amin and his followers during the clash. The incident is rooted in internal party politics and is unrelated to any religious tensions involving Hindus.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the incident was not a religious hate crime against Hindus. But stemmed from a clash between two groups within the Muslim community in Bishnupur.
