Fact Check: Old video of suicide case from Bihar falsely linked to violence in Bangladesh

A disturbing, sensitive video showing a woman and three children in an unconscious state is being shared with the claim that extremists attacked a Hindu family in Bangladesh amid ongoing violence. However, according to reports the video is from Purnia, Bihar, where a mentally disturbed woman, Babita Devi, tragically committed suicide along with her three minor children at their home in Kilpara village under Rauta police station in November 2024.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @SaffronSunanda wrote, “Bangladeshi Radicals are not stopping. Islamists παρed a woman and attacked her children too. She and her children are badly injured. They vandalised her house too. And that devil Soros is openly supporting the Yunus govt. Save Bangladeshi Hindus.” Later,  she deleted the post.

Another propaganda account @TheTreeni also shared the video and wrote, “Extremely disturbing reports from Bangaldesh. Islamists attacked Hindu homes, including women and children in Giripur, Bangaldesh. Several injuries being reported”. Later, the post was deleted.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also shared the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @ajaychauhan41, @Akhand_Bharat_S, @debajits3110

The truth about the viral video shared as violence in Bangladesh, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the sensitive video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was not from Bangladesh but from Bihar, India.

To verify the users’ claims, we reverse-image-searched some key frames from the viral video using Google Lens. This led us to a Facebook post containing the same visuals uploaded on November 8, 2024. The post claims the video is from Purnia, Bihar.

Taking a cue from the post, we performed a relevant keyword search and found media reports and coverage regarding the incident. According to the media reports (1, 2, 3), the video is from Purnia, Bihar, where a mentally disturbed woman, Babita Devi, tragically took her own life along with her three minor children at their home in Kilpara village under Rauta police station in November 2024.
