Fact Check: Video of a massive crowd attending an event in Timor-Leste falsely linked to ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Rally’ in Mumbai

A video recently circulated, showing a massive crowd marching on a road, has been claimed to be from the ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Rally‘ organized by AIMIM, moving from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to Mumbai. However, D-Intent Data has found that this footage was from Timor-Leste, taken during Pope Francis’s visit on September 10, 2024. It was unrelated to India or Indian Muslims.

The video circulated with misleading claims

Several users, influencers, political workers, extremists and propagandists have circulated the video and claimed to be from the ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Rally’.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) propagandist account @SonOfBharat7 wrote. This is not Pakistan or Bangladesh, This is not Iraq, Iran or Afghanistan, This is our Mumbai. Where Muslims have come out on the streets to show their strength. Keep sleeping Hindus.

Another propaganda account @HateDetectors has also disseminated the video and wrote. “Thousands joined a rally by #AIMIM’s #ImtiyazJaleel on Tuesday demanding the arrest of seer #RamgiriMaharaj and #BJP MLA #NiteshRane for hate speech. The rally was denied entry into #Mumbai at Mulund Check Naka”.

Right-Wing media outlet Sudarshan News has also disseminated the video and wrote. “This is not Pakistan or Bangladesh, this is Mumbai! Where fanatic Jalil and his workers danced naked demanding the arrest of Sant Ramgiri Maharaj”. Later, the news agency deleted the post.

Several other users, influencers, propagandists, extremists and media outlets have also disseminated the video and made similar claims. The truth about the viral video of the massive crowd, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the video and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was not from the ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Rally’  but from Pope Francis’ visit to Timor-Leste.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to an initial Facebook post containing the same visuals, uploaded on September 12, 2024. According to the post, the video depicts a large gathering during Pope Francis’s visit to Timor-Leste on September 10, 2024.

Taking a cue from the post, further, we ran a relevant keyword search on Google. This led us to several media reports (1, 2) about Pope Francis’s visit to Timor-Leste.

Therefore, it is evident from verified sources that the video was not from the ‘Tiranga Samvidhan Rally’  but from Pope Francis’s visit to Timor-Leste.
