Fact Check: Video of physical altercation between passengers and a transgender on a train circulated with communal claims

A video circulating online depicts a physical altercation among some people on a crowded train, with claims that a Christian woman was brutally attacked for wearing a holy cross pendant. However, D-Intent Data has found that these assertions are false and unfounded. The footage actually shows passengers, including a transgender individual, engaged in a fight, unrelated to any religious hate crime.

Sharing the video on X (Formerly Twitter) serial fake news peddler and propagandist account @stairwayto3dom wrote. “A Christian woman is BRUTALLY attacked on a train for wearing a HOLY CROSS pendant in INDIA!”.

Several other users, influencers and propagandists have also disseminated the video and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @LoveToLove2022, @ADariya01

The truth about the video, Fact Check

As soon as the posts containing the visuals and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the video and found that the video was not related to a religious hate crime against a Christian woman.

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a reverse image search of some key frames from the viral video on Google Lens. This led us to initial posts containing the same visuals. According to the posts, the video features a transgender (kinnar) individual involved in a physical altercation with some passengers on a train in Bihar. Additionally, In India, it is common for transgender individuals to approach passengers on public transportation to ask for money. If passengers decline to give money, the individuals may react with verbal abuse or aggressive behaviour.

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the video doesn’t depict a religious hate crime against a Christian woman for wearing a holy cross pendant. However, it shows a physical altercation between passengers and a transgender individual.
