Fact Check: Young man murdered in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh due to old enmity, propagandists spread communal claims

Social media users and propagandists are spreading claims that a Muslim youth named Sahil was beaten to death by Vivek, Vikram, and Vinay in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh. However, D-Intent Data has found that these claims are completely fabricated. According to the police, the deceased is Sahil Paswan, son of the late Lalta Prasad, and he does not belong to the Muslim community. 

Sharing visuals from the incident, propagandist and extremist account @007AliSohrab wrote, Uttar Pradesh: A Muslim youth named Sahil was beaten to death with a stick in the middle of the road in Kanpur, Sahil’s sister Muskan was a witness in a case, she was to testify on 24 September…Vivek, Vikram and Vinay were threatening, just yesterday Sahil and his sister Muskan complained to the police station and demanded protection and today the accused (Vivek, Vikram, Vinay etc…) got furious and dragged Sahil out of his house and killed him… ( Translated from Hindi)

The truth behind the claims about murder in Kanpur, Fact Check 

As soon as the posts containing the visuals and claims came to our notice. Subsequently, we conducted research and analysis of the incident and found that the incident had nothing to do with religious hate crimes. 

To verify the claims made by the users. We performed a relevant keyword search and found Kanpur Police’s statement on X. According to the police statement, the deceased’s name is Sahil Paswan S/O Late Lalta Prasad, indicating he does not belong to the Muslim community. Four accused Vikram, Vivek, Akshay and Pritam have been arrested, the incident related to an old enmity between them. Also, It has nothing to do with religion and caste. 

Therefore, it is evident from D-Intent Data’s Fact Check that the deceased was not a Muslim individual. But a Hindu, and the incident was not communal in nature.
