Hathras stampede — Police constable on duty lost his life due to a heart attack after witnessing the dead bodies? Fact-Check

“At least 121 people have reportedly died and several others have been injured at a stampede during a religious event (Satsang) on 2 July 2024, in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras. Claims that a police constable on duty lost his life due to a heart attack after witnessing the dead bodies have been circulating on social media.”

Influencers, political workers and media outlets have circulated a news claiming that a constable on duty lost his life due to a heart attack after witnessing the dead bodies of the people who died in the stampede during satsang in Hathras. However, the police have refuted the claims and said the policeman was posted at a different place.

Sharing the news AajTak said, “Hathras accident: On-duty soldier dies after seeing dead bodies, heart attack. More than 100 people have died due to stampede during a satsang in Ratibhaanpur, Hathras, Uttar Pradesh. Most of the dead are women and children. In the accident, soldier Ravi Yadav, posted on Quick Response Team (QRT) duty, died of a heart attack. According to the information received, Ravi Yadav was on duty to arrange the bodies of the dead. After seeing so many dead bodies at once, Ravi Yadav got a heart attack and died.”

TheLallantop said, “When the bodies of the dead reached Etah Medical College one after the other, a constable posted there became upset and his health deteriorated. It was told that constable Ravi Yadav died of a heart attack.”

Republic Bharat has also published the news and said. ”Hathras: Soldier gasped after seeing dead bodies in Eta Medical, dies of heart attack.”

Truth about the claims Police constable on duty lost his life due to a heart attack, fact-check

After the claims went viral, Etah police issued a video statement and refuted the claims. The police said that the constable was posted on duty at another place, and when he fell ill, he was brought to hospital where he died during treatment.

While releasing the statement, the police said. “On 02.07.2024, constable Ravi, who was posted on QRT duty. Fell ill and was brought to the hospital for treatment, where he died during treatment. Some news channels and social media platforms are circulating news with the title “The constable had a heart attack after seeing the dead bodies”. This is denied by the Etah police.”

Hence, it is clear from the police statement that the constable was posted at another place and he did not suffer a heart attack due to the dead bodies.
