Tamilnadu, India — “Fertility Ritual” Where Women Eat Food From The Floor, No Cow Dung: Fact-Check

There is a video that has gone viral that purports to show women eating cow dung while they are kneeling down and eating from the ground with their hands behind their backs.

Verified accounts on twitter, including @wayotworld tweeted “Bizarre Indian ritual where women put their arms behind their back and – you guessed it – eat cow dung. (no sound)” on March 18, 2024. The tweet has received an about 463.8k views on X.

What is the Actual Truth About this Incident? : Fact

This is an old video from a ritual, that much is true. Dozens of women can be seen taking part in this “Fertility Ritual” and knelt down to eat food from the ground. Some women who participate in this ceremony, which is said to be observed in some parts of Tamil Nadu, India, think that if they eat the food that was offered to the saints while wearing tied hands, their chances of becoming pregnant will increase. The footage was shot at Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu in 2019. Cow dung is not related to it at all.

Every year, hundreds of women gather at a temple in southern India to take part in a bizarre fertility practice that involves some of them eating food from the floor with their hands behind their backs. On July 31, footage shows dozens of women kneeling down to consume food from the floor before praying. The unique event takes place at the Paradise Sithar temple in Sethupetty, Tamil Nadu.

The truth is that this is an old video of a ritual. This “Fertility Ritual” features dozens of women bowing down to eat food from the floor. According to accounts, this ceremony is celebrated in some parts of Tamil Nadu, India, and the participating ladies  with tied hands believe that if they eat the food provided to the saints, they will have a better chance of becoming pregnant. The video is from Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, in 2019. It has nothing to do with cowdung.
