Fact Check: An image of Jawaharlal Nehru immersing his mother’s ashes in a river falsely linked to Kumbh Mela

A widely circulated image shows former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru bathing in a river, accompanied by claims that he was taking a ritual dip during Holi at the Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. However, this claim is misleading. The image actually depicts Nehru participating in the immersion ceremony of his mother’s ashes in the Ganga at Prayagraj (Allahabad). It has no connection to the Kumbh Mela or Holi celebrations and is being misrepresented in an attempt to spread misinformation.

Sharing the image on X (Formerly Twitter) @Bitt2DA wrote, “Nehru removing unemployment and poverty by taking bath in Ganga during Kumbh”.

Another account @Dileep4BJP also shared the image and wrote, “Nehru ji took bath in Kumbh, but the poverty of the country remained the same. Now Kharge ji is engaged in removing poverty by offering chaadar at the dargah. #Kharge #MahaKumbh”

Several other users and Influencers have also disseminated the image and made similar claims. Their posts can be seen here, @kkantbajpai, @ddtsarkar.
