However, a thorough fact-check reveals that there is no caste angle to this incident.

Several users have shared the video of an elderly man being humiliated publicly in Uttar Pradesh’s Kaushambi and linked it to a caste-based hate crime.

Sharing the video, a propaganda account @ambedkariteIND on X (Formerly Twitter), said. “A 65-year-old Dalit is being publicly humiliated. He is being paraded around the village with a garland of shoes around his neck. The upper caste village head husband and his associates are responsible for this act And incident happened in UP’s Kaushambi.”The post is available here (archived)

Another propaganda account @Manishkumarttp on X(Formerly Twitter) has also shared the video and said. “This is how a Hindu nation will be formed,Uttar Pradesh Kaushambi. Prem Narayan of Birner village under Sarai Akil police station was smeared with soot and made to wear a garland of slippers and shoes and paraded around the village.” He later deleted the post and archive of the the post can be accessed here (Archived).

Propaganda account South Asian Perspective (@SAnPerspective) has also posted the video and said. “Watch:— 65-Year-Old Dalit Man Publicly Humiliated with Garland of Shoes by Upper Caste Villagers in UP’s Kaushambi”. The post is available here (archived).

Propaganda media account media The Observer Post has also posted the video on X and said. In UP’s Kaushambi, a 65-year-old Dalit man was publicly humiliated by being paraded around the village with a garland of shoes around his neck. Unraveling the Truth: Elderly Man Paraded with Garland of Shoes in Kaushambi

As soon as the video came to our knowledge we tried to find if the claims are true or false. We visited the official X(Formerly Twitter) account of Kaushambi Police and found a statement regarding the incident. As per the statement, the victim has been identified as Prem Narayan Raidas S/O Ramswaroop, resident of Birner village, Kaushambi.

The Police have registered a case against 5 accused involved in the incident. 1. Bhimsen S/O Santosh Pasi, 2. Ramchandra S/O Geeli Raidas, 3. Basant S/O Shankar Lal Saroj, 4. Sundar Lal S/O Asau and Ajay Kumar Gupta S/O Gulab Chandra Gupta residents of Birner village under Sarayakil police station, Kaushambi. All the accused have been arrested and further action is being taken.

According to Times of India‘s report. A 60-year-old man was thrashed and paraded with a garland of shoes. In Binner village under the limits of Sarayakil police station of Kaushambi district on Thursday. Further the report says. villagers had complained against the elderly for forcibly talking to women and passing derogatory remarks on them.

On Thursday, the villagers caught him, and paraded him in lanes of the village after making him wear a garland of shoes. Cops claimed that a probe would be conducted in the matter and action will be taken accordingly.

The elderly man paraded on the allegations of forcibly talking to women and passing derogatory remarks on them. The accused belong to different castes and most of them are Dalits.

Intent

Influencers circulated the video of an elderly man paraded with garland of shoes and slippers. And projected it as a caste-based hate crime to set their narrative based on caste to create disharmony among communities.
